
The best way to experience Whitehaven Beach is to see it from above. I took this shot from a small plane flying over Whitsunday Island, and even through the viewfinder it was hard to believe what I was looking at was real.
Those swirling patterns in the shallows are formed by tidal movements shifting the sand around Hill Inlet, they change every single day, so no two photos of this place ever look quite the same.
The sand on Whitehaven is 98% pure silica, which is why it stays so blindingly white and never gets too hot to walk on barefoot. It also means it's incredibly soft and apparently you can polish your jewellery with it!
