I heard this one before I saw it, a rapid drumming coming from somewhere in the trees in the Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen. After looking around at the trees I finally spotted it, clinging to the side of a trunk and working its way up the bark looking for insects.
This is a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor), the smallest woodpecker in Europe and surprisingly easy to overlook despite its bold black-and-white pattern. It's only as large as a Tit! So spotting one, and let alone photographing it, felt like a bit of a lucky moment. This was the first time I've seen one as well!
